The first published semicolon was the work of the Italian printer Aldus Manutius(the Elder) in 1496. Manutius established: the practice of using the semicolon to separate words of opposed meaning and to allow a swift change in direction in connecting interdependent statements. Ben Jonson was the first notable English author to use the semicolon comprehensively. The ultramodern uses of the semicolon relate either to the table of particulars or the linking of affiliated clauses.
Although terminal marks ( i.e. full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks) indicate the end of a sentence, the comma, semicolon, and colon are typically sentence-internal, making them secondary boundary marks. The semicolon falls between terminal marks and the comma; its power is similar to that of the colon.

The most frequent use of the semicolon is to join two independent clauses without using a conjunction like"and". Semicolons are followed by a lower case letter unless that letter would traditionally be capitalized mid-sentence (e.g., the word"I", acronyms/ initialisms, or proper nouns). In old English published script, colons and semicolons are offset from the preceding word by a non-breaking space, a convention still current in present-day international French textbooks. Immaculately, the space is lower wide than the inter-word spaces. Some guides recommend separation by a hair space. Ultramodern style guides recommend no space before them and one space after. They also generally recommend placing semicolons outside ending quotation marks, although this wasn't always the case. For instance, the 1st edition of The Chicago Manual of Style (1906) recommended placing the semicolon inside ending quotation marks.

Project Semicolon – stylized as Project; – is an American non-profit community known for its advocacy of psychological health fitness and its epicentre as an anti-suicide revolution. Established in 2013 by Amy Bleuel, the movement's objective is" presenting faith and affection to those suffering from depression, self-harm, dependence and tone- injury". They're known for encouraging people to tattoo the punctuation mark semicolon (;) as a form of solidarity between people dealing with psychological illness or the death of someone from suicide.
Amy Bleuel lived in Wisconsin. After her parents broke up, Bleuel chose to live with her father and his new lady at the age of six. Also, Bleuel endured being physically abused by her stepmom. At the age of eight, she was taken into state guardianship by a child safeguard institution. Bleuel commenced self-injuring and trying to kill herself after she had been sexually mishandled at the age of 10 and raped at 13. At the age of 18, Bleuel's father passed away from suicide, and she was later released from the system. In her early childhood in an institution, Bleuel was raped twice and suffered a miscarriage. Bleuel suffered from drug and alcohol abuse at the age of 30 and had five major suicide attempts.
Bleuel passed away on March 23, 2017, aged 31; the reason for her demise was discovered as suicide. She was romantically involved with her spouse David.
Project Semicolon defines itself as" devoted to presenting faith and affection for those who are floundering with psychological illness, suicide, addiction and self-harm", and"exists to encourage, love and inspire". While they're devoted to achieving lower suicide rates in theU.S. and worldwide, they don't themselves practise psychiatry, and the staff aren't trained, psychological wellness professionals. Rather, they recommend reaching emergency hotlines (e.g. 9-1-1 or the Public Suicide Prevention Lifeline) or seeking mental health professionals. The movement is inclusive of people holding different faiths or cults.
Project Semicolon explains that"a semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life".
The movement grew prominent in early July 2015. People have started uploading snaps of their semicolon tattoos through social media to back the movement, picking up attention from an assortment of mainstream news issues.
Amy Bleuel commented on the aftermath of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, emergency hotlines having reported a sudden spike, that "There is considerable anxiety, and fearfulness driving to self-murder. Also, sadness routes to self-destruction. So many people sensing this, and to an overpowering extent they are opting to go that route."
A book named: "Project Semicolon Your Story Is Not Over" was released on September 5, 2017. Published by HarperCollins, it's a collection of stories and snaps posted within Project Semicolon's online forum.
To commemorate the 2017 premiere of 13 Reasons Why, a self-murder-themed Netflix drama series,co-executive producer Selena Gomez and cast members Alisha Boe and Tommy Dorfman got semicolon tattoos on their wrists.
